Man City Re-sign Gerónimo Rulli as Donnarumma Backup

A cut-price two-year signing replacing James Trafford after his expensive exit, pending international clearance.

Overview

  • Manchester City confirmed the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, on a two-year contract reported at about £1.7m and described by the club as subject to international clearance.
  • Rulli is designated to be City’s number-two behind Gianluigi Donnarumma and was brought in directly after homegrown keeper James Trafford left for Leeds in a deal reported to rise to around £45m.
  • The 34-year-old returns to the Etihad for a second spell after joining City in 2016 without making a senior appearance and arrives with extensive top-level experience, including Villarreal’s 2020/21 Europa League win and inclusion in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup and 2024 Copa America squads.
  • Reports note Marseille needed to move players this summer for financial reasons, which helped keep Rulli’s fee low and let City convert a large outgoing transfer into inexpensive, ready-made cover.
  • The club expects Rulli to join Enzo Maresca’s squad ahead of domestic fixtures this month, adding experience and immediate depth to the goalkeeping group while Marcus Bettinelli remains the third option.
