Man Charged with Murder After Stockton Yarm Lane Stabbing

The charging shifts the investigation toward court as prosecutors and detectives build evidence using forensic work and public footage.

Overview

  • A 31-year-old man was found with serious injuries after a stabbing on Yarm Lane, Stockton, at about 9.50pm on Wednesday and died after being taken to James Cook University Hospital.
  • Richard Shaw, 49, of Leybourne Terrace, has been charged with murder and also faces allegations of sexual assault, possession of a bladed article and assault of an emergency worker; he was remanded for further court hearings.
  • Cleveland Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team has established a scene, kept a cordon in place that affected nearby shops, and is carrying out forensic and witness enquiries at pace.
  • Detectives have asked the public for dashcam, CCTV, doorbell or mobile footage from Yarm Lane, Buchanan Street, Hartington Road and surrounding areas between about 9pm and 10pm, and have given reference number 128489 for contacts.
  • Officers warn against online speculation because legal proceedings are active, neighbourhood patrols continue to reassure residents, and the next court steps will determine how evidence and charges are tested in court.
