Man Charged With Murder After Death at Peak District Stone Circle

Officers say the charge advances a probe that now focuses on witness accounts, images from solstice gatherings, upcoming court hearings.

Overview

  • Isaac Clare-Watts was found dead at the Nine Ladies Stone Circle on Monday June 22 while people were gathered for summer solstice events, and he was declared dead at the scene.
  • Derbyshire Constabulary arrested 23-year-old Szymon Babynko and has charged him with Clare-Watts’s murder; he was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Derby Magistrates’ Court on Monday June 29.
  • Police have also charged Babynko with attempted murder over a separate incident in Hady Lane, Chesterfield on June 25.
  • An earlier arrest of a 41-year-old man in connection with the death ended with that person being released on bail this week.
  • Investigators are asking anyone who attended the site between June 19 and June 23 or who has photos or video to come forward because the large solstice crowds and dispersed footage will be central to reconstructing the victim’s final movements and informing further court steps; the family has publicly appealed for information.
