Man Charged With Murder After Deadly Attack at Minneapolis Crisis Residence

The case raises questions about whether a man with recent violent charges plus a pending civil-commitment order should have been placed in a residence with vulnerable people.

Overview

  • The attack occurred at the Nancy Page Crisis Residence in Minneapolis on Monday, Sept. 28, when police say Derek Duane Faulkner assaulted multiple people; one resident later died and four others were injured.
  • Officers arrested Faulkner at the scene after multiple 911 calls and the criminal complaint records him saying, “I think I killed someone,” while being handcuffed.
  • Hennepin County prosecutors charged Faulkner with intentional second-degree murder and four counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and he is held on a reported $5 million unconditional bond.
  • Faulkner faces separate pending cases from late August: an attempted murder charge in Sherburne County for a workplace shooting and four assault counts from an alleged attack on hospital staff in Anoka County, and court records show a petition for judicial commitment filed Sept. 1 with an order on Sept. 15.
  • The victim was identified by the family’s lawyers as 23-year-old Bryce Alan Hayes and the family has hired counsel to review the residence’s role, while the facility operator, People Incorporated, says it is cooperating with investigators.
