Overview
- Prosecutors allege that on Saturday a 29-year-old man, identified as Jeffrey Feigenbaum, came outside a home on the 1400 block of West Jefferson Avenue, shouted the N-word at a 9-year-old Black boy, pushed him and threw the child’s bicycle while the boy ran away after a dispute about a makeshift fort.
- Feigenbaum was charged with two felony counts of hate crime plus misdemeanor counts of battery and disorderly conduct, according to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
- Naperville police arrested Feigenbaum at the scene and he appeared in court the next day where prosecutors sought detention but the judge ordered his release on electronic monitoring.
- The court ordered Feigenbaum to stay at least 5,000 feet from the victim, the child’s home and school and to surrender any guns, ammunition or other weapons to Naperville police; his next hearing is July 13 before Judge Daniel Guerin.
- DuPage County officials publicly condemned the alleged conduct and note that hate-crime charges raise the legal classification and potential penalties beyond ordinary assault while the allegations remain subject to proof in court.
