Man Charged With First-Degree Murder in Logan Circle Killing

Police credit video, transit footage, GPS data for identifying two suspects, with charges expected for a second man already jailed.

Overview

  • Rico Rashaad Barnes, 36, was arrested by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force on Monday and charged with first-degree murder while armed in the death of Syed Hammad Hussain.
  • Firefighters responding on Feb. 11 found Hussain in his Logan Circle apartment bound at the wrists and ankles, with the medical examiner later ruling he died from blunt force head injuries and ligature strangulation after which a fire was set.
  • Building cameras show two men trailing Hussain into the lobby, assaulting him, and forcing him toward his unit before the attack moved out of view.
  • Detectives say the killing occurred during a robbery, with drawers opened and items taken from the condo, including a bicycle and coats.
  • Investigators tracked the pair across Northwest D.C. using city surveillance, Metrobus video, and GPS from an ankle monitor, and a second suspect in jail on unrelated charges is expected to be charged in the case.
