Overview
- A blue Volkswagen Jetta failed to stop for officers on Sunday and was later found in the Ballymote Walk area, after which police pursued a man seen leaving the vehicle toward Colmcille Road.
- Officers returned to their PSNI vehicle when someone entered the driver’s seat and drove erratically toward an officer, and one officer fired a single round before the car struck the officer.
- The officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries including a broken wrist, a crush injury to a leg and head wounds, and medical staff reported the officer remains in hospital.
- A 36-year-old man, identified in court as Conor Carey, has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated vehicle-taking offences and other driving charges and was remanded in custody with the case adjourned to June 18.
- PSNI leaders condemned the attack, said the use of the firearm and the charges will undergo the usual Public Prosecution Service review, and police said the investigation is ongoing.
