Prosecutors filed 10 attempted murder counts after police released gas-station video and asked the public for witness footage.

Overview

  • Police pursued the vehicle into downtown Los Angeles and arrested 45-year-old Juan Luis Estrada after the car crashed in a McDonald’s drive-thru, with officers restraining him on scene and one officer reporting a non-life-threatening injury.
  • The Los Angeles County District Attorney charged Estrada with 10 counts of attempted murder plus carjacking, felony evading, battery on a peace officer and three hit-and-run counts, and set bail at $10.25 million.
  • Culver City police released security and body-camera video showing the sedan running over a person’s legs and striking others, and said they used license-plate readers and city cameras to locate the car while asking residents to submit phone or dash-cam footage.
  • Investigators have revised the number of people struck upward during their probe, say victims range in age from about 15 to 70 with non-life-threatening injuries, and a pretrial fitness or processing hearing is scheduled as the inquiry continues.
