Man Charged With 21 Felonies After Hourslong Minneapolis Standoff

Prosecutors say he fired at officers as well as civilians, threatened a grenade, faces significant prison exposure pending proceedings in Hennepin County District Court.

Overview

  • On June 9 deputies went to an apartment on Nicollet Avenue to serve a felony weapons warrant and an eight-hour standoff followed after officers say Tyler Joseph O’Brien fired roughly 15–20 rounds from inside the unit.
  • Deputies used a camera under the door and a drone to locate O’Brien, negotiators made phone contact, and he surrendered without further violence after threats to shoot officers and a claimed grenade.
  • Officers recovered three pistols from the apartment—a Ruger 5.7 FN, a Ruger GP100 .357 magnum, and a .380 ACP Derringer—and investigators say rounds struck armored vehicles, a squad car and a drone.
  • Prosecutors filed 21 felony counts on June 16–17, including 18 counts of first-degree assault for attacks on peace officers and three counts for illegal firearm possession tied to a 2015 first-degree assault conviction that bars O’Brien from owning guns.
  • O’Brien is held on $1 million bail with conditions while the case moves through Hennepin County District Court and prosecutors say the charges carry lengthy prison exposure with further hearings to determine next steps.
