Man Charged Over Role in Dublin Chase Granted Bail as Probe Continues

Gardaí say forensic tests and checks on CCTV and social media could produce further arrests

Overview

  • A 21-year-old music promoter, Qayyum Balogun, was chased from Grafton Street to Clarendon Street after a late-night event on Monday and was fatally stabbed before being pronounced dead at St James’s Hospital.
  • Joshua Brodericks, 25, has been charged with four counts of violent disorder and two counts of assault but is not charged with murder and was granted bail on strict conditions including surrendering his passport and a nightly curfew.
  • Court testimony said Garda William McCarthy alleged Brodericks led a '14-man pack' that pursued Balogun and that six people surrounded, assaulted and stabbed the victim while some attackers produced knives.
  • Gardaí have seized knives and blood-stained clothing from rented accommodation and are analysing CCTV, phone video and social media as part of a 'live and fluid' inquiry with several suspects still to be arrested.
  • Tributes and a fundraiser have highlighted the human cost to Balogun’s family, and Brodericks is due back in court next week as prosecutors continue forensic work and appeal for public footage that could change charges or prompt more arrests.
