Man Charged in Series of Assaults on Five Women at UCLA Campus

The case tests campus safety measures after a rapid string of late-night attacks.

Overview

  • The suspect, 29-year-old Olumuyiwa Akindahunsi, is accused of attacking five women on UCLA’s Westwood campus during a span of roughly 11:30 p.m. to shortly after midnight on May 28, officials said.
  • Los Angeles County prosecutors filed multiple felony counts including two counts of assault likely to cause great bodily injury, three counts of assault with intent to rape during a burglary, and an attempted kidnapping to commit rape or robbery.
  • University police located and detained Akindahunsi near Parking Structure 8 after witnesses chased him and multiple victims identified him to officers.
  • Officers recovered zip ties, duct tape and a paracord on the suspect and four of the alleged victims are students, prosecutors said; court and jail records show he is being held without bail and had no attorney listed.
  • UCLA and campus police increased patrols, promoted the CSO Evening Escort Program and urged witnesses to come forward as prosecutors prepare the case and investigators continue collecting evidence.
