Overview
- A 25-year-old construction worker, Jamie Chappell, was attacked at a Widham Gardens building site in Purton on Thursday 23 July and rushed to hospital after sustaining a head wound.
- Doctors at Southmead Hospital carried out emergency neurosurgery during which part of Mr Chappell’s skull was removed and his family say he remains critically ill.
- Police charged 36-year-old James Denys with Section 18 grievous bodily harm, a charge that alleges an intent to cause very serious injury, and he was remanded after appearing at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.
- A second 36-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and has been released on bail, and Wiltshire Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or Crimestoppers.
- The family and emergency crews, including the Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance and site workers, have been publicly thanked for life-saving action, and investigators say enquiries will determine motive and sequence of events.
