Man Charged After Nail-Packed Pipe Bomb Damages Sydney Beauty Clinic

Forensic tests on seized devices and materials will be used to determine motive and whether others were involved.

Overview

  • An improvised explosive device was detonated outside BeautiLab on Concord Road and caused minor exterior damage on June 16 with no reported injuries.
  • Police searched homes in Padstow and Bardia on June 24 and seized two homemade pipe bombs packed with nails, large amounts of metal shrapnel and bomb-making paraphernalia.
  • A 29-year-old man was arrested at the Padstow address, charged with possessing explosives with intent and damaging property by fire or explosive, and was refused bail ahead of a Bankstown Local Court appearance.
  • Investigators also recovered an Audi SUV, electronic devices and a large quantity of peptides at the search sites and say forensic examination of those items and the seized IEDs is under way.
  • Police say the devices were rudimentary but capable of causing harm, the suspect is known to police for prior offences, and detectives are probing whether the attack was targeted or part of a wider threat.
