Overview
- The body of Masuma Sohrabi, an Iranian mother in her 30s who lived at the Waterloo House IPAS centre, was reported missing on Wednesday and found with severe neck injuries near Waterloo Bridge shortly before 9am on Thursday.
- A man in his 30s, identified in court as 35-year-old Ali Sohrabi, was arrested at the scene, charged with her murder at a special sitting of Galway District Court and remanded to Castlerea Prison.
- Gardaí preserved the scene for technical examination, conducted searches including work by the Garda Water Unit, and completed a post-mortem whose results are being withheld for operational reasons.
- Reporting and Garda statements say the victim had previously sought police help and a court order to keep a man who abused her away from shared accommodation, and investigators are probing whether that order was breached.
- Gardaí say they are following a definite line of inquiry, are not seeking anyone else, have assigned a Family Liaison Officer, and have asked the public for witness or camera footage from the Galway Road area between 2pm on Wednesday and 9am on Thursday.
