Man Arrested Outside North Carolina Church With Flamethrowers and Crossbows

The weapons cache and a notebook listing churches and schools prompt public-safety concern as investigators probe motive and possible mental-health issues.

Overview

  • Police took William S. Milliken III into custody after a 911 caller reported an armed person in the Wesley Memorial Church parking lot on Sunday and an off-duty officer confronted him.
  • Officers who searched Milliken’s truck found two flamethrowers, two crossbows, a CO2-style launcher that resembled a handgun, more than 500 rounds of ammunition, knives, duct tape, oxycodone pills and body armor.
  • Authorities said Milliken was wearing a plate carrier when arrested and that court documents allege he had a notebook with addresses and maps of churches, schools and public buildings plus police scanners and tactical gear.
  • Prosecutors charged Milliken with possession of a weapon of mass destruction, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and he is being held at Guilford County Jail on $250,000 bond.
  • Local leaders credited quick reporting and police action for preventing harm, and investigators say the probe is active with possible additional charges as they work to establish motive and assess the suspect’s mental health.
