Overview
- Federal prosecutors arrested Yupeng Sun and charged him with one count each of fraudulent voter registration and fraudulent voting, authorities announced Wednesday.
- Court filings allege Sun impersonated a former roommate by submitting an online voter registration on Oct. 10, 2024 and casting an early ballot at Malden City Hall on Oct. 31, 2024 in the roommate’s name.
- Investigators say Sun also filed fraudulent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services forms in April 2024 that led to the couple’s green cards being seized at Logan Airport in June 2024 and their placement into removal proceedings.
- An immigration judge restored the couple’s lawful permanent resident status in January 2026 after finding forensic evidence and testimony showed they had not signed the forms, and prosecutors say Sun later sent anonymous tips in April and May 2026 accusing the roommate of illegal voting and admitted in interviews that he used the roommate’s name to vote.
- Each federal count carries up to five years in prison, supervised release and fines, and a conviction could also trigger deportation; the case was brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office with help from HSI and local police and arrives as noncitizen voting has drawn wider federal attention.
