Overview
- Multiple callers told troopers about a silver car stopped in the middle of I-10 between 32nd and 40th streets on Monday, and troopers found the driver asleep behind the wheel with the car still in drive.
- Arizona Department of Public Safety troopers stopped traffic, boxed the vehicle in, woke the driver and took him into custody at the scene.
- Officers found open containers, including an empty beer can and vodka shooters, and said the driver had bloodshot eyes, smelled of alcohol and showed impairment on field sobriety tests.
- A records check showed the driver’s license had been suspended earlier this year for a prior DUI, and the man was arrested and booked though his identity and any formal charges have not been released.
- AZDPS publicly thanked the callers who reported the hazard, urged people to call 9-1-1 for dangerous roadway conditions and warned the case highlights risks from impaired drivers and repeat offenders.
