Overview
- Police were first called about a welfare concern at around 8am on Wednesday and by midday the upper and lower forecourts at Terminal 2 were closed under a police cordon.
- Manchester Airport directed drop-offs to the free JetParks 1 car park and ran shuttle buses and marshals to move people to the terminal.
- Traffic on Ringway Road West and the M56 approaches backed up for hours, causing long delays and prompting some passengers to abandon taxis and walk to the terminal.
- Social media video showed the man live-streaming from the car-park ledge and Greater Manchester Police later said the incident is no longer being treated as a welfare matter and arrested a man in his 40s on suspicion of causing a public nuisance and a public order offence.
- The Terminal 2 forecourts have since reopened but the airport warned the road network remains busier than normal and travellers were urged to allow extra time as police enquiries continue.
