Man Arrested After Head-On A1 Crash in Northumberland That Left Eight in Hospital

Police say a wrong-way Audi hit a Mitsubishi, triggering a suspected dangerous-driving investigation.

  • Emergency services were called around 7:30pm on February 21 to a two-vehicle head-on collision on the A1 near Purdey Lodge, close to Rosebrough between Alnwick and Belford.
  • Eight people were taken to hospital, including two with serious head and leg injuries; seven went to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington and one to the RVI in Newcastle.
  • The A1 was shut in both directions between the B1340 and A1167 overnight and reopened at about 6am on February 22 with no further delays reported.
  • National Highways reported extensive debris and an oil spillage at the scene, requiring recovery and cleanup before the road could reopen.
