Overview
- Emergency services were called around 7:30pm on February 21 to a two-vehicle head-on collision on the A1 near Purdey Lodge, close to Rosebrough between Alnwick and Belford.
- Eight people were taken to hospital, including two with serious head and leg injuries; seven went to Northumbria Hospital in Cramlington and one to the RVI in Newcastle.
- The A1 was shut in both directions between the B1340 and A1167 overnight and reopened at about 6am on February 22 with no further delays reported.
- National Highways reported extensive debris and an oil spillage at the scene, requiring recovery and cleanup before the road could reopen.
- Northumbria Police arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving; he was released on bail as officers appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage.
