Man Arrested After Alleged Melbourne CBD Machete Attack Injures Two

The attack comes days after a fatal Mernda case despite Victoria’s ban on machete sales.

Overview

  • Police were called just after 2:30am to Queen Street near Flinders Street following reports of a man armed with a machete.
  • A woman in her 20s sustained serious upper-body injuries and was taken to The Alfred, while a man in his 20s suffered mid-body injuries and is stable at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
  • Officers arrested a man at the scene and are interviewing him as detectives taped off the area, collected evidence and urged witnesses to contact Crime Stoppers.
  • Footage showed shoes, handbags and other belongings scattered across the street, and blood was seen on nearby stairs before being cleaned.
  • The incident occurred on a night when the city was crowded by Grand Prix and Moomba Festival visitors and follows the separate Mernda killing that has led to multiple youth charges.
