Man Arrested After 45‑Minute, 100mph Chase Through Salford

Police deployed helicopters, a specialist Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit and a stinger to halt the pursuit and published footage showing the danger to residents and other road users.

Overview

  • Officers pursued a Nissan Qashqai for about 45 minutes after it failed to stop, with the vehicle reaching speeds up to 100mph on 30mph streets and driving the wrong way around roundabouts and onto verges, police said Tuesday.
  • The chase involved around 10 police cars and National Police Air Service helicopters and ended when officers successfully deployed a stinger to deflate the suspect vehicle's tyres and bring it to a halt.
  • A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and failing to stop and remains in police custody while the vehicle has been seized for further investigation.
  • One officer suffered a hand injury when the stinger was dragged and was treated at hospital, and a woman in another car was also taken to hospital with minor injuries before being discharged.
  • Greater Manchester Police released footage and praised officers for securing a safe conclusion, and the case highlights the trade-offs police make using tactical units and air support to manage high-risk pursuits through built-up areas.
