Man and 15-Year-Old Charged as Alleged Gunmen in Shooting of Ex-NRL Player Matt Utai

Police say the Greenacre attack stems from a feud pitting the Alameddine network against the group known as the Coconut Cartel.

Overview

  • NSW Police arrested a 25-year-old in Marsden Park and a 15-year-old in Emerton on Friday evening, alleging both opened fire on Matt Utai outside his Greenacre home.
  • The pair were charged with shooting with intent to murder and participating in a criminal group, with the older suspect also charged with drug possession ahead of court appearances today.
  • Utai was shot in the leg and shoulder by occupants of an SUV and remains in hospital in a serious condition, with a black Toyota later found burnt out in nearby Wiley Park.
  • Four males aged 16 to 19 were earlier charged over related shootings and a Guildford West arson targeting properties linked to Utai’s family.
  • Strike Force Halesowen raids across Riverwood, Guildford, Lilyfield, Villawood and Auburn seized three vehicles, about 1kg of cocaine, knuckle dusters, electronics and clothing, as detectives probe possible overseas direction and social‑media boasting tied to the feud.
