Man, 78, Arrested After James Bulger’s Grave Vandalised Again

Police are still investigating whether the repeat attack is linked to February’s damage.

Overview

  • Merseyside Police arrested a 78-year-old man from Kirkby on suspicion of criminal damage and theft after Friday’s reported damage at Kirkdale Cemetery in Liverpool, making the arrest at 4.10pm following a 1.20pm alert.
  • The heads of two marble cherub ornaments were removed and are still missing, and detectives asked witnesses to contact 101 or message @MerPolCC quoting reference 26000282253.
  • James’s mother, Denise Fergus, said the repeat desecration left the family devastated and disgusted and urged anyone with information to help find who is responsible.
  • The grave was also attacked on February 26 when two large angel statues were smashed and a teddy was taken, and supporters later raised more than £20,000 to repair the site and improve security.
  • Officers have not confirmed any link between the two incidents, and the inquiry continues as police search for the missing ornaments and keep the family updated.
