Mamdani Launches Organize NYC to Boost Turnout at Rent Board Hearings

The outreach targets June hearings where the Rent Guidelines Board sets annual changes for about one million stabilized homes.

Overview

  • The Mamdani administration rolled out Organize NYC under the Mayor’s Office of Mass Engagement and will start early May door‑knocking in Jackson Heights, North Washington Heights, the East Village, the Concourse and Flatbush to recruit tenants and landlords to testify.
  • City Hall says the goal is larger public testimony before the Rent Guidelines Board in June, which affects more than two million New Yorkers and comes as the citywide median asking rent reached $3,616 at the start of 2026, up 6.2% year over year.
  • Public hearings are scheduled in Queens on June 4, the Bronx on June 8, Brooklyn on June 11 and Manhattan on June 16, with testimony feeding into a summer vote on rent adjustments.
  • The Rent Guidelines Board is legally independent and holds the power to raise or freeze stabilized rents, even though Mamdani appointed six of its nine members in February.
  • Officials say canvassers will not push a specific outcome or script comments, while landlord groups warn a freeze could strain building upkeep and basic maintenance.
