  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the deadline extension on Saturday, giving property owners until Sept. 18 to file exemption claims or appeals after the July 1 surcharge took effect.
  • The surcharge applies to one- to three-family homes assessed above $5 million and condo or co-op units assessed above $1 million for the 2026–27 and 2027–28 tax years.
  • The Department of Finance clarified that it mailed preliminary notices saying “You may be subject to…” to about 17,000 owners and that only those recipients need submit exemption paperwork.
  • City officials moved to add staff, expand 311 support and boost appeals capacity after publishing a supplemental market-value roll of roughly 900,000 entries that caused confusion and privacy concerns.
