Overview
- Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveiled the rehabilitation plan on Monday, August 24, 2026, for the city-owned 1.5-mile BQE Central that keeps the existing two-lane-each-direction footprint rather than tearing the structure down.
- The DOT would build two temporary bypass highways — a two-level bypass along Furman Street below the Brooklyn Heights Promenade and an elevated bypass over the Brooklyn Bridge approach — to carry traffic while crews repair decks, joints and corroded steel.
- City officials estimate the work will cost $3.5–4 billion, take about 10 years with construction starting around 2029–2030, and extend the corridor’s life by roughly 40 years to about 2080.
- Funding beyond amounts already placed in the city capital plan remains unclear and the administration says it prefers to limit federal involvement to avoid tied federal reviews, leaving financing and final budgets unresolved.
- The plan will enter the City Environmental Quality Review this fall with an Environmental Impact Statement targeted for summer 2028 and will study effects on the Promenade, nearby parks and neighborhood traffic while public comment and parkland alienation processes proceed.
