Mamata Banerjee Seeks CEC’s Impeachment After Walkout Over Bengal Voter Roll Revision

The West Bengal chief minister escalates her challenge to the poll body by urging the chief election commissioner’s removal ahead of the final roll publication.

Overview

  • Banerjee and a TMC delegation walked out of a Feb. 2 meeting with CEC Gyanesh Kumar, alleging insult and bias, and later called him arrogant and a “BJP broker.”
  • The Election Commission rejected the charges, said the rule of law will prevail, and flagged abusive conduct, threats and vandalism involving some TMC workers and MLAs.
  • West Bengal’s draft rolls from the Special Intensive Revision removed about 5.82 million names, while TMC alleges wrongful deletions, unrealistic documentation demands and surname mismatch errors.
  • TMC brought families to Delhi claiming some were wrongly marked dead, and Banerjee disputed heavy police deployment at Banga Bhawans, which Delhi Police said was part of her Z+ security cover.
  • Final electoral rolls for 12 states and UTs are scheduled for Feb. 7, legal petitions on the SIR remain before the Supreme Court, and Banerjee says TMC will contest the polls while seeking opposition support for impeachment.
