Mamata Banerjee Lays Foundation for Gangasagar Setu, Hands L&T the Build

The state moves ahead with a self-funded link after unanswered appeals to the Centre.

Overview

  • The four-lane, roughly 5‑km bridge over the Muriganga will connect Lot 8 at Kakdwip to Kachuberia on Sagar Island, with an estimated outlay of about Rs 1,670–1,700 crore and a CM-stated construction window of two to three years.
  • Officials say the tender is finalised with L&T as contractor, with a reported construction quote of Rs 1,567 crore and 12.92239 acres already acquired for approach works, with remaining parcels slated to follow.
  • State leaders say the all‑weather link will ease pilgrim travel to the Gangasagar Mela, aid cyclone-time rescue and relief, and cut transport costs for the island’s residents and businesses.
  • BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari challenged the announcement as lacking mandatory central clearances, land acquisition and key procedures, allegations the government countered by formally handing the work order to L&T.
  • District authorities ramped up mela logistics for Jan 8–17 with over 2,500 buses, 21 jetties, 13 barges, around 45 vessels and 100 launches, plus GPS/NavIC tracking, about 1,200 CCTV cameras and a Mega Control Room for real-time monitoring.
