Overview
- The prohibition took effect on Nov. 1 and forbids anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 2007 from buying or consuming any tobacco product.
- The rule also applies to foreign visitors in that birth cohort, placing compliance obligations on hotels, resorts and other tourism operators.
- E‑cigarettes and vaping devices remain illegal for all ages, including import, sale, distribution, possession and use.
- Authorities set an enforcement period led by the Health Protection Authority, and retailers must verify buyers’ ages before any sale.
- Penalties include fines of 50,000 rufiyaa (about US$3,200) for selling tobacco to minors and 5,000 rufiyaa (about US$320) for vaping violations, as Maldives becomes the only country currently applying such a cohort ban, with the UK proposal pending and New Zealand’s version repealed.
