- The Home Ministry finalised the first phase on Thursday and says the movement will take place on Sept. 29, when 1,476 Myanmar nationals identified by Myanmar will be returned aboard two Myanmar navy warships and a hospital ship.
- The repatriation is the opening stage of a planned staged programme to return up to 5,000 eligible Myanmar nationals under procedures agreed by Malaysia and Myanmar.
- Malaysia is introducing a national Refugee Registration Document, called the DPP, that will replace UNHCR-managed registration and give Malaysian authorities direct access to registration and biometric records.
- Officials reported 10,388 Myanmar nationals in immigration detention depots as of Aug. 15 and said the Immigration Department and police are verifying detainees’ identity, nationality and security backgrounds with checks due to finish by the fourth quarter.
- Human rights groups warn the DPP and state-run screenings could weaken legal protections, increase surveillance and heighten refugees’ vulnerability by removing UNHCR safeguards, while the government argues the changes will boost security and shield local welfare.
