Majority of New Yorkers Back NYC Millionaire Tax, Poll Finds

Albany approval remains the hurdle despite new Siena polling showing majority support statewide.

Overview

  • The Siena College poll of 805 registered voters conducted Feb. 23–26 found 54% support and 29% opposition to allowing New York City to raise income taxes on residents earning at least $1 million, with a ±4.5 percentage point margin of error.
  • Support was strongest in New York City at 62% and among Democrats at 72%, with narrower backing in downstate suburbs at 50% and upstate at 48%, while Republicans opposed 51–36 and independents edged against 40–37.
  • Mayor Zohran Mamdani is seeking state authorization for a 2% surcharge on incomes above $1 million and a higher combined corporate tax rate a little over 22%.
  • Mamdani argues the surcharge would help close the city’s multibillion‑dollar budget gap and avert his last‑resort option of a roughly 9.5% property‑tax increase on residential and commercial properties.
  • The proposal still requires approval from the State Legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul, who has signaled opposition to new tax hikes, saying she does not believe in taxing for its own sake.
