Major Indian Metros Schedule Daytime Power Shutdowns for Summer Maintenance

Utilities say the daytime shutdowns are preventive network upgrades meant to reduce breakdowns during peak summer demand.

Chennai utilities implemented planned outages on Friday, June 19, with St. Thomas Mount facing an eight-hour shutdown that affected neighbourhoods including Meenambakkam, GST Road and Alandur.
BSES and KPTCL published schedules for Saturday, June 20, with Delhi outages lasting up to about three hours in areas such as Hauz Khas and Dwarka and Bengaluru outages up to seven hours in zones including RR Nagar, Domlur and Manyata Tech Park.
All three utilities described the work as preventive maintenance, transformer and feeder inspections, and network upgrades aimed at strengthening distribution lines before the peak summer load.
The planned daytime windows will affect homes, markets and IT parks and can disrupt electric water pumps, online work and businesses, so residents and companies may need short-term water storage and backup power.
Officials and reports advised simple preparations such as charging phones and power banks, switching off sensitive equipment during shutdowns, and tracking official restoration updates since no widespread unplanned blackouts have been reported.
