Major Incident Declared After Large Fire at Avonmouth Recycling Centre

Thick smoke from the blaze has prompted evacuations, road closures, health warnings for nearby residents.

Overview

  • The fire broke out at the SUEZ Avonmouth materials recycling centre on Kings Weston Lane at approximately 1.30am on Wednesday, and all site personnel were evacuated with no reported injuries.
  • Avon Fire & Rescue declared a major incident and deployed crews from around 14 stations plus specialist appliances as firefighters continue working to bring the blaze under control.
  • Authorities warned nearby residents to keep windows and doors closed because a large smoke plume is drifting south, and Avon and Somerset Police closed Kings Weston Lane between the A403 St Andrews Road and Long Cross.
  • SUEZ said the site sorts dry mixed household and business recycling such as paper, cans, plastics and card, which can produce thick, dense smoke when it burns, and thanked firefighters for their response.
  • The fire is causing local travel disruption near the M5 and M49 corridors, emergency services remain on scene, and further updates are expected as crews work to control the blaze.
