Major Fire Destroys Thusis Restaurant and Apartments, Five Missing

Investigators from the cantonal police, with the public prosecutor, have opened the roof and are removing roof layers to search for evidence and possible remains.

Overview

  • A fire broke out just after midnight on Friday and swept through a multi‑story building in Thusis, Graubünden that housed a Portuguese restaurant and residential flats.
  • Nearly 100 firefighters from several local departments battled the blaze but a collapsed stairwell forced crews to cut open the roof with a crane to gain access.
  • Fourteen people escaped the burning building and eight were injured; two were reported in serious condition and the injured were taken to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich.
  • Police say five people remain missing and have secured the scene while working with the public prosecutor to investigate the cause of the fire.
  • In a separate late‑Thursday incident in Schaffhausen, a kitchen fire in an apartment building injured eleven people, nine of whom were hospitalized including a police officer.
