Maharashtra to Send Two Tigresses to Andhra Pradesh and Approves Rs 260-Crore AI Plan to Curb Conflicts

Restoring female tigers is intended to reverse inbreeding and strengthen the Eastern Ghats population.

Overview

  • Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan thanked Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday for Maharashtra’s decision to facilitate the transfer of two female tigers to Andhra Pradesh to support breeding in the Eastern Ghats.
  • Officials say the translocation is meant to increase genetic diversity, address a decline in female numbers, and improve the long-term viability of the local tiger population.
  • At the same meeting cycle, Maharashtra’s State Wildlife Board’s Standing Committee approved a Rs 260-crore action plan to deploy AI-based alert systems in nearly 1,000 villages near forests.
  • The first phase of the AI plan will establish 10 control rooms modelled on police command centres to monitor forest department patrols, coordinate rapid responses to wildlife emergencies, and send alerts to communities.
  • The moves were presented as a coordinated, science-driven effort involving state forest departments and guidance from the Union environment minister and could reshape how states balance tiger recovery with village safety in forest-edge areas.
