Maharashtra Taps ₹12,000 Crore From BMC Reserves for Mumbai Infrastructure

  • Industries Minister Uday Samant told the state assembly that ₹12,000 crore from BMC fixed deposits has been allocated to Mumbai infrastructure projects.
  • BMC’s deposits rose from ₹62,195 crore in 2017 to ₹91,690 crore in 2022 and now stand at ₹81,134 crore after funds were deployed for development, according to the minister.
  • A separate ₹5,500 crore has been set aside to meet pension obligations for civic employees and retirees, the minister said.
  • Under the city’s road programme, Phase I is 79.74% complete and Phase II is 56.52% complete, covering 1,048 roads totaling 278.83 km.
  • Following a ₹65-crore irregularity found in the Mithi River project, older tenders were suspended and action was taken against 13 officials, as the state also reported MoUs rising to ₹31.25 lakh crore with a 75–80% implementation rate and a high FDI share.
