Maharashtra Sets 2037 Deadline to Electrify Entire MSRTC Bus Fleet

The state outlines charging every 25 km, toll waivers, tax breaks, solar-powered stations to support the transition.

Overview

  • Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik told the Legislative Council that MSRTC will transition to a 100% electric fleet by 2037 in a phased program.
  • The corporation operates about 22,000 buses, with roughly 800 already electric, according to the minister.
  • Beyond 8,000 diesel buses already in procurement, all future additions will be electric, with a scheme planned to convert existing diesel vehicles to EVs.
  • Supporting measures include highway charging stations at intervals of around 25 km, a proposal to power chargers with solar energy, and initiatives to promote charging-technology courses.
  • Under the EV Policy 2026, EVs receive tax exemptions and full toll waivers on routes such as the Mumbai–Pune Expressway, the Samruddhi Mahamarg, and Atal Setu, and the minister said this plan would make Maharashtra the first state to fully shift a state-run bus network to electric mobility.
