Maharashtra Orders Aarey Plantation Plan Covering About 65 Acres Before Monsoon

The move feeds into a statewide push to plant three billion indigenous trees over five years.

Overview

  • Shelar’s directive, issued Monday during an on-site review in Aarey, told the Mumbai Suburban collector to prepare a monsoon-ready plantation plan.
  • Early estimates point to nearly 65 acres across veterinary, dairy, police and other government campuses, with final availability to be confirmed by fresh surveys.
  • SGNP, BMC and MMRDA were asked to file reports that set species lists, spell out upkeep, and assess Miyawaki-style micro-forests, a dense native planting method for small sites.
  • The plan will also examine planting on metro-linked land in Aarey, including the vacant Metro Bhavan plot and thicker tree cover around the Line 3 car shed.
  • The effort is part of Mission Green Maharashtra to plant three billion indigenous trees, and Aarey’s past tree felling for the car shed means the public will press for clear survival targets and no new losses.
