Maharashtra Launches SMART Rooftop Solar With 90–95% Subsidies for Low-Use Homes

The Rs 655 crore, two‑year plan will be run by MSEDCL, with procurement and installations now moving into the rollout phase.

Overview

  • Households consuming under 100 units of electricity per month qualify for the new rooftop solar support.
  • A 1 kW system is estimated at Rs 50,000, with Rs 30,000 from the Centre and state top‑ups that reduce beneficiary contributions to as low as Rs 2,500.
  • BPL consumers receive a total 95% subsidy (state adds Rs 17,500), SC/ST households get Rs 45,000 support with a Rs 5,000 payment, and other low‑use consumers receive Rs 40,000 support with a Rs 10,000 payment.
  • The state has allocated Rs 330 crore for 2025–26 and Rs 325 crore for 2026–27, targeting roughly five lakh beneficiaries, including about 1.5 lakh BPL households.
  • Suppliers must maintain and repair systems for five years, with priority deployment in remote districts such as Melghat, Nandurbar and Gadchiroli, and beneficiaries can sell surplus power back to the grid.
