Magnitude 6.1 Quake in Chile’s Coquimbo Region Felt Across Argentina

Chile’s disaster agency ruled out a tsunami threat for the Pacific coast.

  • Chile’s seismological service reported the quake at 10:34 local time with an epicenter near Punitaqui in the Coquimbo region.
  • Shaking was widely felt in Chile and in Argentina, where Inpres recorded effects in Mendoza, San Juan, La Rioja, Catamarca, San Luis and Córdoba.
  • Inpres measured Mercalli intensities of IV in Mendoza, III–IV in La Rioja and Catamarca, III in San Luis, and II–III in Córdoba.
  • Preliminary accounts described roughly 50 seconds of shaking at a depth reported between about 33 and 54 kilometers, with some witnesses noting a loud noise before the tremor.
  • Initial assessments cited no significant damage or service interruptions, and many in Mendoza reported receiving Android early-warning alerts seconds before the shaking.
