Magnitude 5.7 Quake Near Puerto Escondido Triggers Mexico’s Seismic Alerts

Initial inspections found no damage following alerts that provided up to 178 seconds of warning.

Overview

  • The National Seismological Service reported a magnitude 5.7 earthquake at 15:42 local time on February 8 with an epicenter about 19 km northeast of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, at an estimated depth of 10–17 km.
  • Mexico’s SASMEX system automatically issued alerts that reached multiple cities, including Mexico City with roughly 93 seconds of lead time and Colima with about 178 seconds, with varied advance notice based on distance.
  • Authorities activated emergency protocols across Oaxaca, Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Guerrero and other states, conducting aerial overflights, patrols and infrastructure checks, and pausing Metro, Metrobús and Cablebús service for brief inspections before normal operations resumed.
  • Protection agencies reported the quake was felt strongly in parts of Oaxaca and lightly or not perceptibly in Mexico City, and early reviews across affected areas indicated no significant structural damage or injuries.
  • Monitoring and verification continue after a weekend of smaller quakes in southern states, and media noted cellphone alerts still displayed the “Alarma Presidencial” label despite earlier calls to remove it.
