Overview

• India’s National Centre for Seismology recorded the quake at 04:17:40 IST on January 5 near Morigaon at a depth of about 50 km (26.37°N, 92.29°E).
• Tremors were widely felt across Assam, including Guwahati, with reports from several northeastern states and neighboring countries.
• Two people were treated at Morigaon Civil Hospital after rushing out during the shaking, while officials logged minor structural damage including a collapsed wall in Samaguri, Nagaon.
• Preliminary analysis by NCS places the event near the active Kopili Fault with a thrust-fault mechanism, and no aftershocks were reported at the time of its update.
• A separate magnitude 3.9 earthquake was recorded in Gomati, Tripura earlier the same morning as agencies maintained heightened monitoring in this high seismic-risk region.
