Magnitude 5.0 Quake Off Ica, Peru Prompts Monitoring With No Damage Reported

Officials report no damage.

Overview

  • The Geophysical Institute of Peru confirmed a magnitude 5.0 earthquake off Ica that struck Saturday at 3:14 p.m. local time, with an epicenter 77 km southwest and a depth of 18 km.
  • Shaking in Ica reached intensity III–IV on the Mercalli scale, which means most people indoors felt it and some outside noticed movement.
  • Civil defense and the national emergency center kept watch after the quake and reported no injuries or damage as checks continued in vulnerable areas.
  • The IGP also logged a magnitude 4.5 near Puerto Inca early Saturday, and Mexico’s seismic service reported M4.2–4.3 events in Chiapas and Oaxaca that did not trigger the SASMEX alert.
  • Authorities urged families to keep an emergency kit and a simple plan ready because Peru and Mexico sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire and earthquakes cannot be predicted.
