Magnitude 4.5 Quake Strikes Beneath Mount Etna, Rattling Eastern Sicily

Precautionary school closures followed strong shaking, with no injuries reported.

Overview

  • In Italy at about 07:05 local time, INGV located the quake northwest of Ragalna under Mount Etna at a shallow depth of roughly 3.8 kilometers.
  • Shaking was widely felt across eastern Sicily, including the provinces of Catania, Messina and Siracusa, with the strongest reports near Belpasso, Biancavilla and Santa Maria di Licodia.
  • Catania’s mayor ordered municipal schools closed for inspections, checks were carried out on infrastructure including the airport, and flights continued without disruption.
  • The provincial fire brigade reported numerous information calls but no emergency interventions or confirmed damage or casualties.
  • VolcanoDiscovery called it the strongest Etna-area quake in more than three years, and experts say it reflects ongoing magma-related stresses that warrant continued monitoring.
