Overview
- INGV recorded a magnitude 4.5 earthquake at 7:05 a.m. near Ragalna on Mount Etna’s western flank at a depth of about 4 kilometers.
- A magnitude 2.7 aftershock followed at 7:07 a.m. with the same epicentral area at roughly 2 kilometers depth.
- The tremor was widely felt across eastern Sicily, including Catania province as well as parts of Messina, Augusta and Siracusa.
- Catania mayor Enrico Trantino ordered all schools in the city closed today to allow precautionary structural inspections, and other nearby municipalities adopted similar measures.
- The regional Civil Protection launched immediate telephone monitoring, fire brigades fielded numerous information calls, and further verifications by authorities are underway.
