Magnitude 3.3 Quake Rattles Perth and Kinross, Followed by Minor Tremors

The BGS says events of this size fit Scotland’s pattern of small quakes tied to glacial rebound.

Overview

  • BGS instruments recorded a 3.3 ML earthquake at 08:25 BST (07:25 UTC) near Pubil in Glen Lyon at an estimated depth of about 3 km.
  • Two smaller tremors followed in the same area, a magnitude 1.4 at 07:31 and an estimated 1.2 roughly 11 minutes later.
  • Residents in Aberfeldy, Killin, Pitlochry, Tyndrum and other communities reported a loud rumble, brief shaking and rattling windows.
  • No significant damage has been reported, and the BGS is collecting public felt reports to refine its analysis.
  • The UK registers roughly 200–300 earthquakes each year, about 20–30 of which are felt, with Scottish seismicity often linked to post-glacial uplift and wider tectonic stresses.
