Maestral Archived and Will No Longer Receive Active Maintenance

Existing Maestral builds will keep working only while their signing certificates remain valid, leaving users to migrate or wait for a community fork.

Overview

  • The Maestral project is archived and its creator, Sam Schott, has stopped active development and updates.
  • The currently published release will continue to run for now but will stop functioning once its code-signing certificates expire.
  • Schott said he lacks time to maintain the client and no longer uses Dropbox, which he cited as the reason for retiring the project.
  • Because Maestral is open source anyone can fork and continue it, but no active fork or new maintainer has been announced.
  • For about seven years Maestral offered a lightweight Dropbox client for macOS that synced a local folder via Dropbox’s APIs and supported selective sync and multiple accounts, so users who rely on its low CPU and memory footprint must plan to switch to the official Dropbox app, move files to another service, or find a community successor.
