Madrid’s GERA Mounts Two High-Altitude Rescues in Sierra Peaks

Operations featured integrated medical support under severe mountain weather.

Overview

  • Regional officials reported two GERA interventions on March 15 in hard-to-reach areas of the Comunidad de Madrid’s mountain ranges.
  • At Pico de la Miel in the Sierra de La Cabrera, GERA worked with a SUMMA 112 nurse to extract a woman with a knee injury from a very difficult location.
  • At Cabezas de Hierro on the Cuerda Larga in the Sierra de Guadarrama, rescuers located and evacuated two hikers halted by strong wind and fog.
  • The Guadarrama operation lasted more than five hours, and the evacuated hikers were reported safe without injuries.
  • GERA, the high-altitude rescue unit of Madrid’s fire service, coordinated closely with regional emergency services during both operations.
