Madrid Trains 1,800 Volunteers to Support Crowds During Pope’s Visit

City officials say the short first-aid courses are meant to get bystanders to start CPR and alert specialist teams faster to reduce heat- and crowd-related harm.

Overview

  • Samur‑Protección Civil ran short, 50‑minute sessions that trained about 1,800 volunteers at La Almudena on Monday to spot emergencies, use PAS (protect, alert, help), perform CPR and operate an AED.
  • Those 1,800 join roughly 800 coordinators trained earlier, bringing the planned total of trained volunteers to about 2,600 who will wear orange shirts and caps to be easily located.
  • Organizers stress volunteers are not medical staff and their official role is to detect incidents, call responders and deliver immediate basic aid until specialized teams arrive.
  • Madrid has finalized a multi‑agency deployment for the June 6–9 events that includes about 1,000 health personnel, 4,000 Policía Municipal officers, firefighters and advanced medical posts with six at Cibeles and four at Plaza de Lima.
  • Officials expect most cases to be fainting, dizziness and dehydration from heat and long waits, so they issued public advice on hydration and light clothing and produced a digital Volunteer Manual to speed coordination and access to care.
