Madrid to Open Interactive Centre for Victims of Terrorism in First Half of 2027

Fulfilling a regional victims’ law, the project centralizes exhibits, victims’ workspaces, an Atocha replica, a near‑€2.2 million budget

Overview

  • The Comunidad de Madrid has set Carrera de San Jerónimo nº13 as the site for a roughly 1,700 m² Interactive Centre that the region plans to open in the first half of 2027.
  • This week the regional Consejo de Gobierno advanced an investment of about €2.2 million to adapt the four‑floor building and equip the centre with multimedia and exhibition technology.
  • Designs developed with victims’ associations call for permanent and temporary exhibition areas, a conference/audiovisual hall, two multipurpose rooms, a library, an immersive room, workshops and shared office space for victim groups.
  • The centre will display personal items donated by families, including Miguel Ángel Blanco’s drum and Ignacio Echevarría’s skateboard, and will install a small‑scale replica of the original Atocha cylindrical monument using some of the dismantled monument’s bricks.
  • The regional project is presented as meeting the 2018 Law for the Protection, Recognition and Memory of Victims of Terrorism and offers a concrete regional alternative while the national government’s separate memorial plan in Medinaceli remains delayed.
